Last week, Asia Magicians Network (AMN) had the chance to interview Chubster Flores – Philippines Family Comedy Magician about his journey from scratch to being a professional magician.

From Childhood Fascination…to a Professional Career…

How did you first become interested in magic, and what motivated you to pursue it as a career?

“I was bitten by the so-called “magic bug” at the age of 6 years old. I was watching a tv show called Wonderful World of Magic which was hosted by Bill Bixby. Other magic tv shows followed like Doug Henning, Harry Blackstone Jr., and David Coppefield.

Since i was a young kid, i was really fascinated with magic and o dreamt of becoming the David Copperfield of the Philippines (laughs).”

Can you share a memorable moment from one of your live performances?

“There were many, but i was part of the Disney Channel Philippines launch and did some magic, but that was a long time ago. Also performed to some tv personalities.”

What do you consider to be your signature magic trick or routine, and what makes it unique?

I love magic wands, and one thing i like the most is the “Silver Scepter”. It’s a silver magic wand that has a life of it’s own. You see I don’t really bring large props on my show. I’m what you may call the packs flat plays big type of a performer. I also love using change bags during my shows.”

Can you discuss the process of creating and designing your own original magic tricks or presentation?

“Let’s just say i put my own take on certain props, I don’t follow the instructions that comes with in, but i try to inject my own presentation.”

Turn audience to… a magician!

How do you interact with and involve audience members during your performances to create a sense of participation and wonder?

“Great question. My show is really interactive with lots of audience participation (mostly kids and sometime adults). I want to kids to experience the magic themselves, so i ask them to help me out on certain presentation. I let them hold on to certain props and let them be the one ‘do the magic’.”

Can you share an experience where a magic trick didn’t go as planned, and how you managed to recover from it?

“You mean disaster hahaha…
Well, i was performing at an outdoor venue amd it was humid. I was about to produce two doves from a prop and when i open the lid, both doves ended up dead. It turned out my assistant loaded the doves way ahead of time… How can you recover from that (laughs).”

How do you handle skepticism and criticism from skeptics or audience who challenge you during your magic show?

“With the age of Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and other social media platforms, there are no more critics nor skeptics, why… Because they can watch from those social platform how things are done hahaha… But before, some think magic we call as entertainment, to other they say witchcraft.”

I understand that you were doing some TV ads? Can you tell me more about it and how you got into it?

“I got into doing tv ads by chance, i was oerforming magic for a company and someone from the advertising department of an Ads agency saw me. She ask me to do a vtr for a certain product, as i am fit to do the part… I got the role and was abke to do at least 10 more tv ads.

One was magic related, but they only use my hands to make thing appear and disappear…”

Magic as an art…

Can you share a personal philosophy or belief that guides your approach to magic and the experiences you want to create for your audience?

“With the rampant and knock off magic props flooding the market now, anyone can just buy and perform magic.

You must love the art and embrace the art.”

What advice would you give to aspiring magicians who are just starting their journey in the world of magic?

“Practice, practice, practice. Know the who’s who in magic and it’s history. Keep the magic alive.”
